And yet..that's what happens. For example, it's quite common to be
approached by "charity muggers" on the streets, trying to sign you up to
support various charities through a monthly (Direct Debit) donation.
Typically, you give your name, address, bank account details and sign the
form to setup the DD. You then get a confirmation letter (which is
presumably what Clarkson ignored or didn't get) but the Direct Debit is
activated without any further affirmative action by you.

A signature IS required but presumably Clarkson's was forged. As I said
earlier, I have a vague memory of reading that there is a new system where
you can set up a DD without even a signature (in the UK) but not sure of
the details..I could be wrong..
