I just read a review[1] of "Rethinking Hindu Identity" by DN Jha[2]. If
anybody on the list has read it, would love to hear what they think of it.

This particular quote (from an interview, not the book) resonates with what
Shiv posted -

"The invention of Hinduism is opposed to our idea of a composite culture of
which we are justly proud. Emphasis on the Hindu-Muslim dichotomy has led to
many problems in our country. If we could do away with the term Hindu, much
of these problems would be solved"
