There are 2 English translations of Monte Cristo. From my Googling, I found that no one knows who did the first translation, it is anonymous. The legality of translating and selling an unauthorized version across the channel in England at that time may have been a factor. IAC this is the translation you will find on Project Gutenberg too. Its language is flowery and archaic, but I actually like that since it immerses me in that period of time. All the shortened versions derive from this anonymous translation, since it is copyright free. The second and modern translation, as you mentioned, is by Buss for Penguin. It has got good reviews. I plan to read it sometime to see the difference :-) ~ash
