Yeah, well that's one very good point.
The problem with the contained and semi-contained AC units is the ducting
and piping.
There are other good points about the open window, and I think they are
numerous and get subtle as chi.
IN general, the open atmosphere is not a place for viruses, and they have
nowhere to hide! A bit like when you die and see the vastness of it all and
kick off into it (or near-death experience)...quite unsettling for humans
and germs.
There's ionisation and so many factors - let's start to look into this, eh?
Even the moisture in the air is different, purer, and at the sub-atomic
level, whilst not 'primary water' and though recycled, is altogether
fresher. Germs hate this. They tell me so. Or so I think.

All an AC unit needs to work is a heat sink to disburse thermal energy
