Any droplet size that's small enough to not trigger the cough reflex should do just fine.

The issue of droplet size is that there is an optimal size above or below which the medication is not delivered deep into lung tissue. Room humidifiers do not make the same size droplet as a nebulizer. You can research the specs on droplet size or speak to someone who sells various nebulizers and knows the specs. It's been some time ago that I researched this for myself when I was looking at purchasing a nebulizer and many on this list were discussing adapting room humidifiers. If that is all you have then it is better than nothing but an ultrasonic humidifier is not equivalent to an ultrasonic nebulizer. That is my only point.
