Nancy,
Sorry you had such an awful time..........but FWIW, I did not need
estrogen replacement after surgery, trying to take it gave me a few bad
years. But much later I did find out I should have been using
progesterone only. In fact it seems that had I been on progesterone and
thyroid, I may not have needed the hysterectomy, but that is impossible
to know for certain decades later. I had always been way too high
estrogen, and still was after surgery. From what I read this is really
not unusual. But with removal of the ovaries, despite the adrenals (if
healthy) supposedly producing some progesterone, progesterone is the
hormone that stops almost entirely instantly with the ovaries gone. I
have been much better the past few years with progesterone replacement
only, finally being able to stop worrying about estrogen, as I always
did horribly with estrogen meds. I now also eat so as to reduce estrogen
further, and take a couple supplements that also reduce estrogen.

Yes it is. If a hysterectomy is done before menopause the female
hormones have to be replaced. Estrogen, progesterone and testosterone
levels will need to be replaced. After menopause adrenal glands, if
they are healthy will take over making the reduced hormone levels that
the body needs at that time. That is how I almost died the first time
as my adrenals weren't healthy and it wasn't discovered until then
that I had adrenal insufficiency. Anyway won't bore you with more :)
