Ouch! I don't quite parse your meaning here. Sorry?! <smile> > Furthermore, the recent departure of Stuart might more > accurately be attributed to you or a position you have arbitrarily, as > moderator, taken to remove him. No doubt about this point. However fairly I may try to act and however objective the standards I claim to apply, the ultimate decisions about who participates and even the list's continued existence are entirely subject to my whim. The limited discussion Stuart and I had offline suggested that he doesn't see any flaw in his own behavior. For that reason more than any other I saw no basis for safely inviting him back. > I believe such suppression of discourse does a disservice to > objective inquiry -- the basis by which all of us arrive at > understanding. In this decision, I am considering the concrete impact of rude behavior on the social environment of the list far more than the theoretical virtue of "service to objective inquiry." In plain words, the constant arguments among the handful of "technical types" has long ago gotten out of hand and robbed us of much of our sense of community, of belonging to each other. The fact that some command a greater level of intellect and knowledge does not give them license to ignore common courtesy. > The exercise of unilateral authority has never created an atmosphere > in which the divine right freedom [of enquiry, in this case] has > flourished! Stephen True indeed. However, the silver list exists in a sea of competitive information sources. My moderation, such as it is, is only one of the things that determines the value of the list to its members. At that level, everyone is free to accept or reject the package. I'm not taking sides in the scientific debate. I can no more tell you who's right than predict the next lottery. But I *am* taking sides against rude and/or quarrelsome expression. I do thank you for your commentary, Stephen.
