Hi Dottie,

I think there's reason to be at least a bit cautious when using diatomaceous earth. It's quite unhealthy to breath, and would be unhealthy for the lungs of a pet too.

Similarly, use caution when deciding to use another supposedly "safe and natural flea killer"... Pyrethrum - an extract from chrysanthemum flowers. I know of a cat who just yesterday started having seizures... the owner's vet diagnosed the problem as poisoning from flea shampoo containing pyrethrum, and marketed as safe for cats and dogs, NOT!

Just 'cause it's "natural" don't mean it's safe ;-)

You can apply with a duster applicator - it is very fine dust. It won't hurt your animals or you. Once I had fleas so bad in my home I thought it would be easier to move out!! Sprinkled some d.e. mixed with boric acid powder on the carpet. It works itself in and does its thing very quickly. You vacuum it up, but a lot still remains for future problems - they say up to a year or until you have your carpets cleaned. Once d.e. becomes wet, it is ineffective. I'm not kidding when I say one day I had fleas, the next day I didn't. It killed the eggs, nits and adult fleas. You can even sprinkle the d.e. directly on your pets. <<<

Hi Gladys - Diatomaceous earth are single celled algae that are mined.  To a bug they look like crushed glass.  They work by slicing bugs and then the d.e. is so dry, it sucks their life blood right out of them.

I buy mine at a local gardening supply co. called Grangettos.  You should check at Nurserys and gardening supply places around you.  Also, Home Depot only carries the d.e. that is for pools.  This has been processed and is not at all the same product so be careful that the d.e. you buy is NOT for pools.

Hopes this helps - also, do a web search on d.e. - all kinds of info and applications available.

Dottie
