As one member pointed out to me in private e-mail, you ought to give some thought to the integrity of the phone system and your relationship with Ma Bell. The energy might be "free for the taking" but I'm sure they'd frown on your borrowing it for purposes other than telephones and accessories. Do damage to their equipment or wiring and you could give yourself a bigger problem. The same applies to phone jacks in public or commercial establishments. My suggestion is work up a knowledgeable set of instructions with details on how to identify the correct wires *and* a current limiting device such as a resistor or small lamp in line to prevent any possibility of damage to the circuit. It *is* a clever idea and I'm not trying to put the kibosh on it. If you're going to bend the rules to "sip" a trickle of power from the phone company at least make sure you do it carefully.
