i printed out your drawing, after i copied it to an e-mail, to myself, and

one call to the next, or do you just have to be carefull putting the
resistor and led in the correct leg? thanks for the info.
No, it does not change from one call to the other. It changes from one
building to the other, and often from outlet to outlet in the same
building. The LED and resistor can be in either leg. The polarity must
be observed.
Usually the long lead is the positive lead.
This should not be so, however, the phones will typically work without
regard to polarity. The CS gen would also, except for the fact that an LED
is a diode. IT will block one polarity just like any other diode.
So, to avoid this possible problem, the full wave bridge is a "idiot proof
polarity device". Often individuals other than the phone company are
involved with premises wiring.
I learned this trick years ago when people were always connecting depth
finders and gadgets in boats. They would get the polarity wrong. So, I
fixed up a few of these "idiot proof polarity" devices to keep them out of
trouble.
Also.... on many large UPS systems, a diode is installed to instantly SHORT
when battery polarity is connected improperly.
If you do not have a "one part" full wave bridge, you can use 4 individual
diodes connected as the drawing shows.
It does take a small bit of understanding to do this, as simple as it is.
