Hello "Altanation",
Below is an excerpt from a reply on my
own experiences which you might like to try out.
regards, Kevin Nolan
"Hello B..,
I have previously posted some details of the LVDC setup.
Basically, the current configuration consists of a 2 litre round plastic
container atop of which sits an acrylic holder to which is centrally mounted
a stirrer motor driving at ~ 200 rpm through a plastic straw drive shaft to
an acrylic rectangular block impeller which clears the container bottom by
around 10mm - this insures almost uniform stirring from top to bottom. Anode
is a 1mm thick rectangular 9999 silver plate measuring 40mm X 200mm. Cathode
is a SS plate of the same dimensions, wrapped in 2 turns of fairly thick
cotton twill, secured with rubber bands. Plates are symmetrically suspended
from acrylic holder a few mm above bottom of container via clamp screws,
separation being ~ 62mm. Wetted lengths are about 160mm. I still use as
voltage source a multi-tap transformer, the 7.5 VRMS tap being full-wave
bridge rectified and smoothed with a 470uF elecrolytic cap, a 1200 ohm
resistor in series then acting as current limiter [as noted below, could
have used a 1.5V battery]. Any old deionized or distilled water seems
satisfactory, after around 1/10 or so of a teaspoon of citric acid has been
stirred in to about 2 litres of the water (quantity not critical). This
dramatically increases conductivity, so that 1200 ohm resistor acts as the
current clamp. During around a two hour run, current will typically start
around 6.8mA, initially dropping a little to maybe 6.4mA, then gradually
picking up again to settle around 6.6-6.7mA. Measured voltage across
electrodes was around 1.5 volts. Thanks to the cotton wrap, plate-out is
minimal - a thin fairly adherent film on the SS plate that barely stains the
cotton (only at plate edges). No need to filter the brew, which is perfectly
clear and no sparklies. Fairly strong Tyndal observed with laser pointer.
Have no idea as to mix between ionic and colloidal, but there is a
moderately metallic taste. Solution is stable in PETE bottles for at least a
month - usually used up well before then. ........
Previously, I had used two silver plates as anodes, and 4 SS plates or wires
as cathodes. Without any cotton wrap, plate-out was a real nuisance,
necessitating filtering through a coffee filter, and meant I had no real
idea as to the actual % silver going into solution. Current would steadily
rise throughout run, but only from say 11mA to ~ 11.4mA. Quite happy with
present arrangement, ....."
