Because Encephalitis always causes brain swelling I would guess that they did give some kind of anti-inflammatory and did not report it?
But yes, it is difficult to treat and I would certainly use EIS as well as DMSO IV initially and then follow up with oral maintenance doses several times a day. Same with West Nile, the faster you get the anti-inflammatories going the better the chances of full recovery. Best would be too keep some EIS going in their water source. Even a very low ppm would help ward off all kinds of problems and may even kill worms at the single cell stage.
