Sometimes food sticks to the bottom, even while cooking in water. Pasta is a great example. So when cooking pasta, it has been my experience to stir frequently until is becomes soft enough so that sticking stops. If this is missed it's a real B**CH to scrap off. So next step would be to soak pan or pot with hot water ti'll caked on food comes loose. My used set which I bought shows signs of scrubbing, with some sort of abrasive, ( scower pad ) most likely. Little elbow grease and some patience usually gets the job done. Nothing comes without some effort. We live is a "fast" paced society where everything we do we want immediate gratification or a quick cleanup. :-) As for toxicity of glass, I haven't come across any information to support this.
