They use to use silver nitrate in the baby's eyes, but because the pharms made no money on it they convinced most hospitals to use unreliable antibiotics instead. A hospital locally was using antibiotics, and a baby was blinded because the gonerreah it was exposed to was immune to the antibiotics. They were sued for a large amount of money, and it was shown in court that the hospital abandoned a protocol that was 100% effective for one that was not effective just so they and the drug companies could make more money. Since losing that suit, they and a number of other hospitals switched back to silver nitrate from what I can understand.
