Marshalee,
You might try bromelain instead of or in addition to papaya. Here is
some info on bromelain:

Whenever any recommendation says to use papaya, I use bromelain instead.

Well my knee was doing much better, until Wednesday when I made a

Xrays showed the beginnings of wearing out the meniscus cartilege, and
