This was my situation as well. QPQ just wasn't cutting it for us and could never have reliably handled where we needed to go, so I bit the bullet and became a Linux geek, which, I might add, took about a year, and still when I experiment with non-critical machines and the "latest" stuff, causes gray hairs to pop out. But if you have any *nix experience, it should not be difficult. >I have seen a PPC version of Linux that will run on the 7200 (or >"better") and have heard of "Mac on Linux" which purports to run Mac >applications. Does anyone on this list know if SIMS will run under >this? IMO there are still some stability issues. Every once in a blue moon, Mac-on-Linux appears to go deaf. I have been keeping up with the development branch of MOL and it is getting better and better, but strictly speaking, if you are running anything -really- mission critical, I'm not sure I can recommend it. >For a clean cut over, I will have to configure and test the setup >before pulling the plug on the old. Not sure I would recommend the 7200 anyway. Although there are plenty of people around who have Linux/PPC running on it, I think it was one of the first PCI Macs and I seem to recall heavier than usual list traffic discussing 7200 quirks (with Linux). YMMV. An 8500 or 9500 would be just fine (I think 7500 also), and G3 upgrade cards work well with Linux/PPC in those machines.
