A while (as in a few years) back someone on this list developed a web mail solution that worked with SIMS, although the name of it escapes me at the moment. You might check the list archives. Also, I don't know about its current incarnation but past versions of 4D Webmail have worked with SIMS.
You're probably thinking of MMS, from http://www.magix.com.my/mms/ . At the time it looked fairly promising, but these days I'd recommend the 4DWebmail over it (I'm in the process of switching now).
MMS loads a little faster by virtue of the fact that it pulls down the header info first & displays that before downloading the actual mail. 4D hasn't figured that one out yet (though I suggested it), so the current incarnation displays the results *after* downloading everything, and therefore appears to the user to be slower.
On the plus side, it handles attachments better and has a bayesian spam filter which seems to work fairly well. Like any software, there are a couple of relatively minor bugs to be worked out, but it appears to be a pretty solid offering.
