What Wayne says is correct. But note that session timer isn't required 
for a UA to determine if its peer is dead. It is free to initiate a 
message to its peer in the dialog (e.g. a reINVITE or UPDATE such as 
session timer users, or an OPTIONS or whatever) and note if a response 
is received.

Session timeer is useful for intermediaries on the signaling path (e.g. 
a proxy that has Record-Routed) to determine if the endpoints are still 
functioning.

Hi All,
 
is there any technique for SIP protocol to determinate when the remote 
side is unreachable (for example powered off without sending BYE msg), 
something like round trip delay in H323 ?
