For sure....I've seen that too. But in that scenario I've always found it best to pursue a fix with the ITSP. An ITSP that doesn't renegotiate the codec properly typically ends up with more issues later on...so the best fix is to fix it there. But the reason I think the issue is not a codec issue is because the issue did NOT exist with 4.0.4 before the upgrade to 4.2.1....if I've been following the thread correctly. However, the media services in 4.0.4 did NOT support G.729 either.
