John,
I was about to answer my own email (bad netiquette) so thanks for
responding. I noticed that in polar projection north is indeed always up (at
least the last few minutes). In alt-az mode Z is definately not always up. I
tried using the 'search-locate' box but I must be missing something. To
reproduce try the following:
- select western view
- draw a box around an area of the sky that's off-center
- double click in the box
- note that Z is now not straight up, it's to the side at some angle
Not sure how to recover from that. Rotation is set to 0 degrees in the
locate dialog.
Thanks,
Sander

Subject: Re: [skychart-discussion] How do I orient a zoomed chart? Print
suggestions.
When using polar projection, north is usually up, and in alt-az (zenithal)
projection, the horizon is down, but I've run into situations when switching
back and forth where the chart gets skewed. One way to get it straightened
out
again is to click "search>locate new position..." and set the "orientation"
to
0 degrees.
I like the ruler idea. I often draw a box to zoom in, so I sometimes loose
track of the scale, and trying to find numbers on the grid lines to
determine
the scale can be tedious.
