What on earth gave you that idea? They simply *started* in the S Hemisphere
and worked their way N...

For general stuff down to ~mag 16 UCAC will be the catalogue of choice.
Scheduled for release later this year. FWIW UCAC1 and 2 were *interim*
releases. Other than that it's USNO B1.0. So, for general stuff, the
catalogues of choice will be...

Tycho 2 -> Mag 11
UCAC -> mag 16.5
USNO B1.0 -> mag 20?

Obviously there is a place for specialty catalogues. And in that case it's
whatever floats your boat. And don't winge about crap astrometric and
photometic data.

Peter

Subject: [skychart-discussion] best star catalog down to mag 14 or so?

I'm seeing more stars in my C11 than the Tycho-2 catalog contains. There
is the GSC-ACT catalog but its homepage on projectpluto says it's
obsolete. USNO is nice but huge and I don't need mag-20 (I wish :).
UCAC-2 sounds promising and contains the range of stars I care about. If
I'm reading http://ad.usno.navy.mil/ucac/ correctly it's mostly geared
towards the Southern hemisphere though, right?

So, which catalog do you recommend for dim stars in CdC?

Thanks,

    Sander
