Mike,
could it be the star is below the horizon? Can you find the star on the
screen by yourself and then confirm it's visible with the current
settings? Not sure if you mentioned the version you're using. In 3.x the
screen will not zoom in to show the object if it doesn't pass the
current filter settings.
