One other idea: Do you know (via your sighted friend) if the status change alerts are appearing on screen when they should? Since you say the sounds are not playing though the options for those are checked, I suspect you're right and the alerts are also not appearing for some reason. You are of course right that I use MSAA, and if an alert doesn't appear, there's nothing for my scripts to say. :)
