Win2K Professional will be the way to go. 96MB will be best and 128MB will
be ideal. I could tailor all of the services loading to load bare bones
Win2K with 56MB usage for kernel+services. 64MB may do, but it will be
sluggish, counting the list on my task manager, I would recomend 96mb.
I have currently 128MB for a development box where I do heavy Java/MQSeries
development and run browser/email stuff at the same time and it runs all
without any problems and the speed is very good. I also run Apache on this
box at the same time.
The CPU I use is only a P266. So that seems to be quite sufficient. As a
general rule of thumb if NT works fine on the hardware, Win2K pro will run
ok on the same h/w.
But, it is a different matter for Win2K Server & Adv. Server as they are
tuned to use more mem by default. So, for Win2K Server it is min 128mb,
192mb or more recommended and for adv. server, it is 256mb min, and 512mb
recommended. But, I assume that this does not apply for your case.
Win2K pro takes 512MB of hard disk or less on a tailored install. So,
allocate that and some amt. for your paging (double your mem size) and then
the rest if for your applications.
2GB will do for your requirements.
Note: The following is anectodal and my personal experience. On the same
spec machine, Win2K pro performs better than NT. I have not done any
benchmarks etc.. but I can visibly feel the difference. Go figure.

I suggest that this is a bit of a low spec for a StarOffice box. StarOffice
seems to run ok on my P266 box, but then I always feel that it runs best on
our PII450 server !!!!
All the traditional server side stuff like apache, sendmail, routing etc.
screams on a low end box even a 486. Anything to do with the frontend, like
heavy KDE stuff and StarOffice, I would suggest a P166 or a P200 as a min.
