Does anyone else here use Zeta as an ISP? If so, could you let me know
if your internet access has basically stopped for the last few days?
At home, we're getting transfer rates of about 20 bytes/sec on our
33.6kb modem, accessing Zeta itself. In contrast, ftp to/from Zeta is
fine, and email is fine. Netscape, Lynx are choked, however. It
happened on Friday, I think, after a couple of days where the mail was
stuffed up completely and we couldn't send or receive any. (Which just
silently started working on Wednesday evening, with no changes made to
my system at home.)
ftp uses ppp, I'm told, just as http does. Expert advice has been that
this all means that they're probably silently forcing their http
traffic to a proxy, and it's broken in some way.
Now, I've reported this to Zeta but had no response, and it's been days,
so I thought I'd ask if anyone else here who's a Zeta subscriber was
having the same problem. Feel free to contact me off-list if you like.
Personally, it seems to me that Zeta's quality of service has plummeted
since they were bought out by Pacific Internet.
I really don't think it's a problem with my config, as it happened
several weeks *after* upgrading to RH 6.2 from RH 4.2; and more
significantly, booting up the old RH 4.2 system which has a completely
separate set of system files (it's on a separate partition), also shows
exactly the same problem. Even though none of its config has changed
in months.
