Bullshit. You've got MORE reason to scream, not less.

You're paying Telstra for a service. If this service is not provided as
stipulated in your contract {and yes, that *is* what exists between the
subscriber and Telstra, regardless how few people know it}, you're
entitled to complain. If the non provbision of service is cronic, you're
entitled to demand repatriation.

So a few pieces of gear was fried in Victoria. This brings up the
immediate questions

1) Why wasn't this equiptment protected? I *know* that telephone exchanges
are adequately lightning protected.

2) Why wasn't redundant/hot swappable equiptment available for immediate
replacement is this "fried" gear is so vital to network performance

And no, I don't work for Telstra either - but I certainly did, once upon a
time, and not so long ago. The service levels suck. That's all there is to
it.
