Were you using the recommended (and very much required, at least for early
2.4 kernels) 2 * RAM swap space? That can fix a *lot* of problems.

Greater than only. :) 2.4.10 seems ok for me. The more recent ones have all
had silly little things that would Never Have Happened if Linus had opened
2.5 and Alan was maintaining 2.4.
