Linux was born like Unix. The whole GNU heritage comes from that philosophy too. Unix is essentially a server system that was never built to satisfy the average home user (and until a few years ago there wasn't any effort to make GNU/Linux a desktop system). Can we make it become one? Sure. It'll just take a good amount of time.
It's all good to say distro XYZ is secure and better than Windows (whatever is meant by "better"). But I bet Uncle Joe doesn't give a rat's ass about that if he can't copy content from a web browser and paste in a spreadsheet without losing any of the formatting. Or buy a computer that he doesn't know how to use out of the box, that he won't be able click the "local network" icon, find another computer, and use it's printer with only a few clicks. Etc, etc, etc. The day that a **unified** effort is made to create a desktop OS with Linux is the day that we will start to make progress towards making it used by anyone (e.g.: what Apple did with BSD). So far, it's like most programmers when they create websites: they put black text over a white background, and they say that's good enough, because you can read the information, and that's all one should need.
