Fine, but what does the name tell you - nothing... You wouldn't even
know it was Linux let alone what its target use is. Even on their web
site they find it necessary to explain the meaning of the word. All
nice touchy feely motherhood stuff that says nothing and certainly
doesn't provide guidance for the prospective Linux switcher. I won't
even bother to describe my own reaction when I first heard the name...
So you'd prefer something like "Linux - It's an Operating System".
Whatever your reaction was, you cannot extrapolate that across the entire
population. I personally think Gentoo sounds like some sort of mucusy
eruption. But that is just my opinion. A name is whatever people make it,
especially when it comes to brand awareness. The guys behind Ubuntu have
worked to make the word mean something to the tech crowd,
...exactly, to the tech cognisenti, but not to a much wider audience.
just as MS has
worked for the last twenty odd years to make Windows mean something other
than "Hole in the Wall" (hmmm, but that is another discussion).
...but everyone know what a window is, very few know what a ubuntu is...
