Ok. Looks like opportunity to improve our marketing brochures. We were not prepared for the detailed installation instructions at the time of making the product announcement :-) But this discussion is helping and we have already made a couple of small changes to how we finally package the product.
The design is versatile enough so that it can accommodate various installation options - Residential as well as Tower sites. The Outdoor unit accepts power by EITHER the RJ11 cable OR from the Cat5 cable. We will have to illustrate all options in our installation manual. The RJ11 connector for power is confusing people. But it is used quite often in the Telco gear. A lot more reliable connection than the round pin connector of normal power adapters. It also allows easy extension by using the normal in-line female-female connector. The Outdoor rated RJ11 cable is also easy to find. >From earlier comments made by Chris and Sully (thanks guys), we realized that the original plan of supplying Flush mount face plate will not work in many parts of the world. Many countries have brick and concrete walls. So we will have to switch to surface mount wall plate that can ALSO be flush mounted for people who care. It also looks like we did not do a very good job in selecting the name PoE Outdoor. One of the main features of the product is Protection and Building code compliance. Since this is missing from the name, we will have to keep reiterating that benefit on the CPE side installs. To clarify the installation scenarios, I will borrow some text from your message. >From inside --- - The 48V Power Brick plugs into the wall - The RJ11 plug from the brick plugs into the wall plate provided. You can easily extend the length by using a connector. - The wall plate puts power on to the CAT5 cable. - You then have a RJ45 cable running outside to the PoE box (only one wire). - There you balance the power, sense the length of the cable, and power the device it's plugged into. - In addition, the outside unit includes proper lightning and surge suppressor circuits, proper grounding lug to meet the building code. This is the main reason why it is sitting outside, required by the code. Hope this clarifies. It sounds like what you are creating here consists of the following... >From inside --- - The 48V Power Brick plugs into the wall - The RJ11 plug from the brick plugs into the wall plate provided - You then have an RJ11 cable AND an RJ45 cable running outside to the PoE box - There you balance the power, sense the length of the cable, and power the device it's plugged into. TWO PROBLEMS WITH THIS Using an RJ11 plug to supply power to the PoE box is NOT a great idea. I can't wait for the customer calls on their cell phone saying that their phone doesn't work in the jack we installed, and the internet is down. I saw the earlier message in this thread about going ahead and combining power and Ethernet at the jack to power the PoE device. Great idea. Basically, take the 48V DC power supply, put a "Standard size and polarity" barrel connector on it. Then take a small surface mount jack box and put the RJ45 and the barrel connector receiver on it. Then run Cat-5 out to your PoE box. Personally this seems redundant to me. The absolute best use for something like this would be at the top of a tower to power 3 access points. Putting this at a client site is overkill. That's just me though... :-) Kevin Summers KISTech Internet Services Inc. www.kistech.com > -----Original Message----- > From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Nish Park > Sent: Friday, August 22, 2003 9:10 PM > To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Subject: RE: [smartBridges] smartBridges launches PoE Outdoor > > > How else you put power on the cat5?
