The one thing that everyone is overlooking is that if you must have the pairs then use 2x Cat 5 cable. And there is a RJ45 like plugs that has 12, 14, or 16 connections so that you can use what you need. I say use all 16 of them. Now you can easily power almost anything you can dream of.
But then the real easy way is to use 48vdc. And a good DC-DC power supply (please see http://www.dc-dc.com/products/products.asp) which can handle the high voltage as an input voltage. This would let one go far beyond any dream of what Ethernets can go. Or does this make too much sense? Basically, take the 48V DC power supply, put a "Standard size and polarity" barrel connector on it. Then take a small surface mount jack box and put the RJ45 and the barrel connector receiver on it. Then run Cat-5 out to your PoE box. Personally this seems redundant to me. The absolute best use for something like this would be at the top of a tower to power 3 access points. Putting this at a client site is overkill.
