You're not alone. There are several open issues in illumos asking for USB 3, and more than one thread about it on the mailing lists and in the IRC logs. It's not trivial, and Joyent has no use for it, so it's unlikely to come from SmartOS. It might come from Illumos and/or OI one day, but the people who know enough about it are generally committed to higher priorities.
