if I had used the contextual menu I think it would have been 
fairly easy.

Good example of 'if you get stuck, ask, even if you think you 
know already'.

I suspect it would have been smoother if I had not had to 
upgrade it. But also I suspect that at least once, it was 
working from the backup of the new phone (which contained only a 
few details). So killing the automatic sync probably also helped.

I'm only bothering to explain this in case some poor bugger is 
searching the web. Thanks smug-gang.

So the following line is for google's benefit:-)

upgrading iphone and keeping settings sms I can't get my new 
iphone to restore from the back-up of my old one. buying a 
payandgo iphone for use with contract.
