it would help to know stuff like whether you have thousands of folders. You can export individual mailboxes, for instance.
Give us more background about why you're downgrading and your mailstore set-up and so on. Has your 10.6 machine died but you have a PPC so you're trying to retrieve yor user data (for instance)?
