I have pretty much discarded the tethering idea for reasons you point out as
well as that my Macbook seems to not want to link by Bluetooth to the iphone

Interesting suggestion about virgin which I will look at

My only concern about that is whether they will want to tie me to a 12 month
contract if I am only going to rent for 6 months potentially

I had a good look the Vodafone website yesterday and found a FAQ indicating a
specific USB dongle if you have a mac

Hi Dr Fox,

Official tethering using iPhone is expensive and restricts you to 3G
speedzzzzzzz. http://shop.o2.co.uk/update/internet.html

Unofficial tethering still has the same speed problem and O2 will probably be
alerted by your consumption. Not sure what they'd do about it.

I've only ever used it as a quick fix, usually when staying in
£15-per-day-for-internet-mickey-taking hotels. I don't know of anyone using it
as their primary internet connection.

Thank you for all the suggestions so far

I won't be able to get a landline/cable broadband without hooking up to BT
which I don't particularly want to do as I will be renting a flat for 6 months

Therefore I think I am stuck with mobile broadband

I have used a Vodafone datacard on a PC which generally seems to have been
reliable

I have thought about tethering the Macbook via Bluetooth to my
iphone.......does anyone access the internet in that way?

I use a 3 mobile dongle on my boat - it seems to work just fine and speeds are
adequate.

I'm sure a landline would be better all round though.

The Vodafone software doesn't work with Snow Leopard - you have to install it

The 3 one seemed to work Ok for me though.
