Thank you to everyone for your helpful advice. The outcome is that I have now tried twice to install the update. The first time, after about 12 hours of it hanging on backup, I stopped it. I restarted it a bit later, and left it to its own devices overnight. This morning it was still hanging on the backup, so I left it alone. The next time I went to the computer it said that the sync was complete, but, in fact, it hasn't installed 4.0.
So - I'm back to square one, and I'm going to try again in a few weeks time. I had been looking forward to having folders, but, hey, I'll just continue using Spotlight to find my apps.
