Sounds like hard drive (cheap) but could be logic-board (expensive) and 
notorious on G5, especially pre-isight models.

If it is hard drive, and you feel confident, it is very easy to switch and 
instruction PDF's are available from Apple.


Beware cheap logic-board replacement outfits such as those using ebay to 
advertise their wares......I paid £200 for a replacement logic-board install 
and within 3 months it had failed.
