Hello Sam, I tried the disc utility but it came up first aid failed disc
utility stopped error -9997 . Also I noticed that if I leave flashing question
mark on, the fan or hard drive increases in speed and noise after about 5
mins.
Regarding the reset of PMU is this only if you have no screen on startup or is
it worth trying anyway? I have just run software and hardware test disc and it
came up that logic board , mass storage, memory and video ram had passed.
 Thanks Howard

iMac G5s have a PMU, not SMC. The Power Management Unit can be reset depending
on your model of iMac, some have a button inside the case or if they have an
iSight camera you can just remove the power cable for 15 seconds

It's more likely that the hard drive needs replacing, that can be done quite
cheaply. Around £60 for a 1TB drive. The more expensive part will be recovering
your files from the drive, depending on the severity of the damage to the drive.

If you boot from the installer DVD, are you able to open Disk Utility? If so,
does the drive appear there and is it repairable?
