iMac G5s have a PMU, not SMC. The Power Management Unit can be reset depending on your model of iMac, some have a button inside the case or if they have an iSight camera you can just remove the power cable for 15 seconds : http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1712
It's more likely that the hard drive needs replacing, that can be done quite cheaply. Around £60 for a 1TB drive. The more expensive part will be recovering your files from the drive, depending on the severity of the damage to the drive. If you boot from the installer DVD, are you able to open Disk Utility? If so, does the drive appear there and is it repairable?
