Im 99.9% certain trash doesn't get stored in time machine.  Trash is a
hidden system folder on the root of each hard drive you have, its best to
delete items by clicking the trash icon in the dock and emptying in the
usual way, rather than tinkering in terminal or unhiding files in the
finder.  The space utilized on your drives includes the trash in the totals,
so emptying the trash (or just certain items from there) if you have a lot
in there should free up some space instantly.
