Thanks Sam,

Almost as soon as I had posted I realised that I could 'select all'
files in the trash folder once opened from the Dock, and then copy
them to a new folder before emptying! I have ordered a new 2TB WD
Firewire MyBook (I already have a 1TB ditto and a 750 GB USB Seagate
FreeAgent). I have a lot of video footage to import into iMovie as
events and then edit, so I plan to use the old 1TB MyBook for this and
use the 2TB MyBook for Time Machine, asking it to back up the internal
HDD and the 1TB MyBook. The Seagate I will use to store archived
docs, photos etc. Unfortunately it's not easy to put a larger drive
inside the iMac, so several externals seem to be the way ahead.

Is there some way of limiting the size of the Trash folder so that
older items are deleted automatically to make room for new ones?
There was a setting for this on my Windows PC, but I haven't found one
on the iMac.

Regards
David Beveridge
