in the end, according to a kb page, I force-shut down and restarted. seems ok.

The logic with Maps was put very well on a page I read via daringfireball: 
essentially, the longer Apple used google's system, the better google got. Now 
that half the google users have gone over to Apple's, they should equalise in 
about 18 months.

We don't know if it was google who pulled the plug on the whole thing, 
remember...

they use openstreetmaps org data -- worth going there to make a correction that 
you really care about;)
