in the end, according to a kb page, I force-shut down and restarted. seems ok.
The logic with Maps was put very well on a page I read via daringfireball: essentially, the longer Apple used google's system, the better google got. Now that half the google users have gone over to Apple's, they should equalise in about 18 months.
