It turned out to be a loose cable!

That’s odd, I wouldn’t normally classify a hard drive replacement as
being a manufacturing defect unless if it’s in a MacBook 2006
white/black model and is a Seagate (there was an extended repair program
for that). Hard drives get thrown around a lot so they’re usually the
first things to fail. I’m glad Apple were flexible with that repair then!

Interesting. I spoke to an Apple support guy in the US last week about
a 2 year old MB Pro which wouldn't boot - folder icon with a question
mark - and he went through the various diagnostics concluding it
needed a repair. He was very careful to make sure I understood my
rights under UK law and that it should be free to the extent of
emphasising the point a number of times.

Hi All

Just thought I'd share my experience with my MBP 2011. The graphics card
soldering failed, an endemic manufacturing defect which is the subject
of a class action lawsuit in the states, so I took it to the AppleStore
today.

They quoted £420 to replace the logicboard but I requested they waive
the fee under the UK Sales of Goods Act, stating that my laptop was not
sufficiently durable or fit for purpose and as such was covered. The
genius disagreed and said the manufacturing defect was not official so
couldn't authorise a repair.

I asked for the case to be escalated to a manager and he came back 5mins
later with approval for a complete repair under an extended warranty but
that it would take 7 days to complete.

I've just had a call to say the repair has been done and the laptop is
ready for collection (same day), which means they must have a stack of
replacement logicboards in anticipation of the problem.

If you have a 2011 MacBook Pro and get lines/visual distortion onscreen,
it's worth sticking to your guns.

Regards

Sam
