I don't know if this applies but there is a known issue with the iPhone 5
if you use it with a non-genuine lightning cable. There is an IC that
appears to get fried when using non genuine cables as they apparently don't
regulate their voltage in the same way.

I've seen two go like this and replacing the IC is possible but extremely
labour intensive.
