The Genius Bar can always be a big help. I once took my MacBook in to them
when it was a few months out out of warranty but they still carried out a
repair free of charge.

With regards to your phone, if it has been happening since the software
update it may be an iOS8 problem rather than hardware problem. I have the
same issue on my iPhone 4S since I upgraded to iOS7. The device could have
anywhere upto 40% battery life but it will shut itself down claiming to
have no battery life, however it would start up again when the charger is
connected or if I leave it for 30 minutes or so.

With iOS devices they don't carry out hardware repairs in store. They will
swap your phone for a like for like. They still have stock of the iPhone
3GS just incase someone comes into the Genius Bar with one. If the phone
does need replacing out of warranty the worst you would be looking at is a
small fee for unit replacement. Recently did this with an iPhone4 because
the home button was starting to stick. £40 charge and they did a like for
like replacement - new iPhone4.

Hope this helps.
