Genius bar appointments get booked up really fast, so I would always
recommend booking an appointment at a convenient time for yourself *as soon
as* you notice the slightest strange behavior with your mac or iphone.

Chances are that basic troubleshooting will solve the problem, in which
case cancel your genius appointment and you haven't lost anything.
Otherwise you can tear your hair out for weeks troubleshooting a hardware
issue, give up and book an appointment, and then have to wait a further
week before there is a time slot you can make.
