Thanks Adam, really helpful post. I don't think I've fried that chip, but that 
confirms I won't use after-market cables again!

Benjamin, I didn't know about the swaps, so I think I might head in store. 
Thing is, if it's an iOS issue (sounds like you have the same trouble on your 
4S) will a replacement handset give me he same grief?
