I don't know the new iMac but just in case you end up buying the wrong
attachments, I think Virginia is referring to USB **C**. USB 3 looks
identical to USB 2 (which you are accustomed to). The 'universal' in USB
looks ever more of a lie...
But they can be made to talk to each other (that's where 'universal'
does work). You could get a hub that all your old stuff plugs into.
good luck!

Thanks Virginia. That’s really helpful. I’ll almost certainly get
one if this plays up in future!!!

Andrew - I’ve got a new MacBook Pro. It has 4 USB ports but these
are a different size (i think they are called USB3) to the ones on
my old Mac. I have bought adapters from Maplins (v cheap) which
connect printers, external drive etc which have old USBconnections.
It all works fine.

Hi Sam.
Yesterday I tried altering the channel (I’m sure there is a
correct term for this) on the Fritzbox - with no effects. And this
morning, I changed the channel to 8 - and it seems (touch wood) to
be working OK now. Bizarre, as I’d tried it yesterday and it was
still not working.
Don’t know if it is time to by a new iMac, but I don’t like the
lack of USB ports as I have printers, scanner etc which need them.
Unless I’m misunderstanding the new iMac …
Anyway, I shall just hope that a) this keeps working and b) we
don’t have more power cuts - which really seem to upset it!
Thanks
Andrew

Hi Sam. That wouldn’t really be feasible - the router is
downstairs and the iMac upstairs ... it’s a bit large to move
about easily. Unless you mean simply to see if it works?

Hi. Highly frustrated with internet access. I changed from BT
to Zen in December. My iPad, iPhone and MacBook (an old one,
c.2008) could all connect via the fritzbox fine but my iMac
couldn’t, or only for seconds at a time after switching
internet access of and on again in the bar at the top right of
the screen.
After following advice very kindly offered from Smug members,
it has since worked perfectly from early January until
yesterday. When there were 5 short power outages one after
another, which turned off both the Mac and the FritzBox. I was
still able to connect to the internet this morning but a
further power cut seems to have scrambled something. I’m back
to being able to access the net in everything but the iMac.
Any advice would be very much appreciated. Many thanks
Andrew.
