Normally the best way to handle single Ethernet runs that are over 100
meters is to convert over to fiber. Remember that Ethernet is designed with
a single leg limit of 100meters. This is built into the jam signal and
problems with exceeding the distance limit normally don't show up until you
have significant traffic on the line, and causes weird and hard to trouble
shoot lost data problems.
If you already have the switches and can't replace them, AND you have the
ability to run fiber between the buildings then a simple converter like the
Blackbox FlexPoint 100BASE-TX to 100BASE-FX Media Converters
(http://www.blackbox.com/Catalog/Detail.aspx?cid=308,1416,1499&mid=5047) is
a simple, easy and reliable way to go. Notice that these are only 100Mb/s
connections which may not be enough for network backbone traffic.
If you want a gigabit connection, AND have the ability to replace the
current switches, many switches now have plug in ports and fiber adapters
for them. Look for 'SFP' or Mini-GBIC
In the past I have used A LOT of 3Com equipment, and I have successfully
used Dlink equipment such as the DGS-3324SR. You would want 1000Base-SX SFP
modules. You would need a reliable cable installer to run the fiber from
building to building. In Southern California I have have been VERY happy
with Cablelan

Subject: [SOCALWUG] Wired Ethernet limits
I know this is a wireless group, but I'll try anyway.
We have 3 separate buildings that are 400-500' each at least apart from the
each other.
Anyone have suggestions? What type of wired repeaters work best or
long-haul devices.
Thanks,
Victor
