Have a look at 3gstore.com . Some of the modems they sell even have
GPS built in. Their prices are discounted a bit from what is sold in
Verizon and Sprint stores. They also run evdoforums.com where you can
ask questions of other users.

As to whether to go with Sprint or Verizon, look at the coverage maps
to see if they have coverage in areas that are important to you. In
most cases the coverage is pretty much the same but there are areas
where one has EVDO coverage and the other has only the slower 1xRTT
coverage.

If all other things are equal, I'd probably go with Sprint over
Verizon because doesn't lock features out of their phones because they
want to charge you an extra monthly fee (e.g. the Blacberry that has
GPS that both sell, but is locked out of Verizon's version unless you
pay them an extra $10 a month). Also, Verizon will slow down your data
transfer rates if you use more than 5 GB a month (they used to cancel
your account altogether).

I have been using a Verizon XV6700 as a modem (not officially
supported by Verizon) as a modem, but my contract's up mid-April and
I'm seriously thinking of switching to Sprint. Sprint didn't have EVDO
coverage in the Flagstaff-Williams area the last time I checked, but I
only go there for a few days about once a year.
